The French language was the language of the salons and the bourgeoisie, but it was also seen as a foreign language: a dilution of the ´true Flemish identity`.
The resistance was not easy, but it was persistent. To your right is the living monument "The Aula´ of the university that speaks of a great Flemish Tale. A moment where the Flemish language won and the Flemish people prevailed. It was official: the university of Gent would teach in Dutch! A moment of pride and victory. On the first day of teaching in Dutch, the pro-French cut off all the lights symbolizing the start of a dark age over the university of Ghent.
Very dramatic and Shakespearean you might say.
The hotel where you are staying today is trying to keep that legend alive: the quest for identity.
